PTI COACH / PRACTICE GUIDE
Build a pre-trip
practice routine.
Make a section familiar, try saying the checks from memory, then return to the parts that need another run.
PTI Coach brings three ways of studying together: Read, Listen and Your turn. You can choose the full Class A pre-trip routine or focus on one of its eight sections. The useful starting point is a study session you can return to, at a pace that lets you pay attention.
1. Hear a section and get familiar with it.
Use Listen to hear the sequence of checks. When you are looking at the app, its photos and text follow the current check. You can listen to a section by itself or work through the full routine.
Choose a playback speed from 0.75× to 2×. Jump back ten seconds when you want to hear something again, or open a particular check. Background and lock-screen playback on mobile make listening useful during suitable moments such as a walk, a train ride or a break.
2. Give a check your attention.
Switch to Read when you want to look closely at a photo and read the matching words without audio. Back and Next let you move at your own pace. Listen from here opens the recording at the check you are reading.
Reading and listening keep separate saved positions. You can return to a quiet reading session without losing your place in the recording.
3. Try saying it before you hear the answer.
In Your turn, look at the check title and photo, then say the checks aloud. Press Play answer when you are ready to reveal the text and hear the recording. You choose when to move to the next check; finishing the answer recording does not advance the slide.
This is self-practice. The app does not record or automatically grade your voice. Compare your answer with the material and use your instructor’s guidance for the details your test requires.
General learning research supports practicing recall as one way to strengthen delayed retention. It does not establish a CDL pass rate for PTI Coach. See the original retrieval-practice study by Roediger and Karpicke.
4. Keep a useful review list.
Use Know it and Needs review to mark slides. If a check needs another run, save it to Review my slides. Open an individual slide or practice the saved group. Change a mark whenever you need to; tapping a selected mark clears it.
Your Home progress shows checks marked known, checks to review and unmarked checks. These are your own study marks. They do not measure test readiness or predict an exam result.
Inspection order gives you another way into the material: all 67 checks in course order, grouped by section. At a section’s end, Next section lets you continue deliberately rather than starting over.
5. Keep your official checklist close.
The app includes a printable Class A checklist and Full PTI sheet. Save or print them for reference and offline review. Its state-resource directory helps you find official study links for your location; selecting a state saves the resource link and does not change the shared audio course.
FMCSA directs CDL applicants to their own state’s manual. Confirm the inspection format with your instructor or testing location and follow your vehicle’s instructions. Find FMCSA’s state and CDL manual guidance.
This guide explains how to use PTI Coach’s study tools. Mechanical instruction and testing requirements should come from your current official materials and qualified instructor. Practice that requires looking at photos or answering aloud belongs in a setting where you can focus safely.
